The most prevalent immune-mediated inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system is multiple sclerosis (MS). Multifocal regions of demyelination with oligodendrocyte loss and astroglial scarring are pathological features of MS. Another major pathologic trait, particularly in the latter stages, is axonal damage. Although the illness has numerous atypical forms and a very varied course, several clinical characteristics are typical of MS.
